After serving for 15-years as vice chancellor at The Jewish Theological Seminary, he moved to Chicago where he began his rabbinical career. Schachter and his wife Lifsa moved to Cleveland in the 1980s when Schachter was offered the position of senior rabbi at B'nai Jeshurun. The leadership at B'nai Jeshurun worked closely with Schachter during the synagogue's historic move to the Pepper Pike facility. From 1987 to 2002, Schachter served as the synagogue's spiritual leader, and was rabbi emeritus until his retirement in 2015. Following his retirement, Schachter continued to teach at the Siegal College of Judaic Studies and worked as Jewish chaplain at The Cleveland Clinic. In 2007, his book The Book of Laughter and Torah was published, which describes the relationship between Jewish humor and Jewish religious teachings. The Stanley J. He served as rabbi of Oheb Zedek congregation for fourteen years. He next served six years as rabbi of another Cleveland congregation, Nvai Zedek. In 1945 he accepted the position of dean of the Salanter Yeshiva in New York City, but returned with a year to Cleveland to become rabbi of the Heights Jewish Center, where he remained until his retirement in 1972. Porath was the founder and chairman of the Orthodox Rabbinical Council and served on the boards of the Bureau of Jewish Education, the Jewish Welfare Federation, the Jewish Community Council, and the B'nai B'rith. His major scholarly contribution was Mavo Ha-Talmud (Outline of the Talmud), published in seven volumes from 1941-1960. Lelyveld served as senior rabbi of Anshe Chesed Congregation (Fairmount Temple) in Beachwood, Ohio, a suburb of Cleveland, from 1958-1986. Throughout his career he played key roles in national and local Jewish organizations and actively fought for civil rights. A native of New York City, Lelyveld received a B.A. from Columbia University in 1933, and was ordained at Hebrew Union College in 1939. From 1939-1944, he served congregations in Hamilton, Ohio, and Omaha, Nebraska. From 1944-1946 he was Executive Director of the Committee on Unity for Palestine, and from 1946-1956 served as Associate National Director, and then National Director, of B'nai B'rith Hillel Foundations. He also played leadership roles in a number of other national Jewish organizations, including American Jewish Congress, Central Conference of American Rabbis, and the Synagogue Council of America. On the local Cleveland level, he served in various capacities on the Cleveland Jewish Welfare Fund, the Jewish Community Federation, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, Cleveland Chapter, and the Cleveland Board of Rabbis. Lelyveld was also the author of Atheism is Dead and of numerous monographs and articles. He was active in the civil rights movement of the 1960s, participating with other Cleveland clergy in voter registration efforts in Mississippi and serving as a minister-counselor to the Council of Federated Organizations under the auspices of the Commission on Race and Religion of the National Council of Churches. While serving in this capacity, Lelyveld was severely beaten. He also delivered the eulogy at the funeral of slain civil rights worker Andrew Goodman in 1964. Brickner (1892-1958) was a New-York born Zionist, educator, orator, and Rabbi of Anshe Chesed Congregation (1925-1958) in Cleveland, Ohio. He was involved in numerous local, national and international organizations, both Jewish and non-sectarian. To realize his goal of promoting and enhancing Jewish family life he created a Young People's Congregation at Anshe Chesed. He also directed the congregation into a more traditional Reform observance and the Zionist movement. Brickner was also extremely active in local Jewish organizations, including the Cleveland Zionist District, the Bureau of Jewish Education, and the Jewish Welfare Fund. Nationally, he served on the Executive Committee of the Zionist Organization of America, chaired the Committee on Chaplains of the Central Conference of American Rabbis during World War II, and in 1943, was selected by the National Jewish Welfare Board to serve as executive chairman of the Committee on Army and Navy Religious Activities. In 1953, he was elected president of the Central Conference of American Rabbis. He married Rebecca Aronson Brickner in 1919. After his retirement he served as Emeritus Rabbi of the congregation. Born in Montreal, Canada, he studied there at Sir George William College and then at the Jewish Theological Seminary, New Ork, where he received his rabbinical ordination in 1953. His first pulpits were in Canada with Congregation B'nai Israel in London, Ontario, from 1953 to 1956, and at Congregation Beth Am, Downsview, Ontario, from 1956-1957.
